Ice Fishing Safety : Local Ice Fishing Information

I'd like to talk to you for a moment about the use of local information What we refer to as anecdotal evidence; a decent safe thick ice

One of the things you want to do other than looking on your topo map and checking out the ice thickness and drilling test holes, is to ask the locals Go into the local hardware store Go into a bait shop Ask who's been out on the ice? How many days have they been out there? Talk about the weather What kind of weather has affected the ice conditions? You may notice back here behind us quite a ways out just off of the point there's a small cluster of ice fishermen with ATV's; ATV's and portable shanties

I think you can even see and ATV with it's lights that just went out Those people are going to offer us a lot of information on the weight distribution that is necessary for the ice In order for an ATV to be on ice, again, you want to have 6 to 8 inches of ice
