Fly Fishing Basics – How To Get Fly Out Of Tree

Hi It's Anni from kajanaclub

com – fly fishing community When I'm fly-casting it's not unusual to have my fly stuck in a tree At least for me it's a common problem Often the fly is tangled around the branch few times on a loop so if you just pull it it's only tightens it until the tippet line breaks So how to get your fly out of a tree when it's too high for you to reach? You can use the reel of your fly rod to reach a little bit higher and it helps if you have a friend so the other one can bend the tree and the other one can take the fly out of the tree Now let's get out and fishing

On this video you see some awesome trout and you see this tip used in action We have a rule And the rule is, if there's a fish If you are with the camera you have to run It's a cold day We'll try a small test to a new river

Mikitänjoki River I haven't been here before It's supposedly small place So let's go and check it out Cute little trout stream

All right We are here We have a team of five today We have two spin fishermen from Helsinki And then the regulars I'll try a green one

It's early summer, it's so green outside No theory behind that, just a wish He had already another take The fish got away and now the fly is there Summer is new and fresh and green

I was running so much First the other fish was on that side And that was a native wild fish so we put it back it was maybe 40 or 45 centimeters we put it back or maybe 50 I don't know we didn't measure it because it was a wild one And then mom's cousin she caught another trout on this side this side of the stream and I've been running back and forth

And I fell as well so now I need to breathe Oh, excellent fishermen and ladies, and now you get out there If you liked this video click the like button and share it with your friends and fishing buddies and be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel Thanks for watching and I'll see you in the next video There

But hopefully I can catch a trout We've had lots and lots of rain, at last, but there's a lot of color in this river which is normally clear and I don't know if I can catch a trout in these conditions let's try, oh hello, oh no now I've not supposed to have cast to that I was supposed to have waited There you go That's why I come to the River Exe

Whatever it is it doesn't like the net! I do believe it's a sea trout, and my net isn't big enough for it! Ha ha ha, that is fantastic!! My word! and let's hold that beast up look at that beautiful, beautiful fish (it was a brownie after all! absolutely, that is fantastic! I'm sorry I can't quite believe I caught that! Urban Trout Fly Fishing in Tiverton on the River Exe

As you can see I've walked down to the river today It's not very far from my house, I'm very lucky to live eh, I don't know, 10 minutes walk at the most from the river, probably a bit quicker if I didn't have my wading boots on, and the intention today, this afternoon was to fish the town section up to the weir I've seen guys fly fishing there, and that section there's a nice little run just before the road bridge it's nice and deep it's all shadow on the far bank so with this bright light hopefully trout be lying under there However because we haven't had any rain, proper rain for 24 hours, a little bit yesterday, but not a lot, the river is starting to drop

It's becoming a lot clearer yesterday, I had two beautiful trout in my favorite spots, well two of my favorite spots, gorgeous trout, wild brown trout so because I managed to get those and because it's such a beautiful afternoon I decided to keep walking and start halfway on my regular beat because I'm going to be fishing these spots here which are some my favorites under these trees I don't think I'm going to go down too much further, so I'm just going to go down to the access to the river ducking underneath the electric fence and once I'm in place, once I'm on the bank I'll set up my rod Something rose there, just going to have a quick look to see if it a grayling or a brownie I'll approach from behind Brownie! I've never really caught brownies from over this side The most, the bigger ones, the larger ones are always under the trees, that may be grayling I don't know but at least is a rise! That's two fish now I've seen rise in a short space of time

One definitely brownie and the other one we don't know Because this stretch of the Exe is stuffed with Grayling If I was a confident fly fishermen I would say the grayling far outnumber the brown trout, but I may just be really bad at catching brown trout and grayling are so much more visible than the Brownies let's walk away from the river, then we'll do a little bit of prospecting as I come up through As always obviously I'm gonna be fishing a dry fly it's just my favorite method

I'm not being a snob saying that nymphs don't count it's just I'd rather walk a stretch of the river watching a dry fly than using an nymph Right I'm not going to test if this fence is live that hurt last time! There's a couple of other spots which I like just down there but I'm not gonna go too much further because guys I could just keep walking all the way down to the end of my beat, but I've got limited time like all of us Right, I'll stand over here set everything up and I can watch the river yes let's do it here Hopefully you've had chance to look at my video yesterday No sound, because I forgot to talk! It's been so long since I've had any success because the river has just been in flood, I just forgot to talk, I was concentrating too much! please do watch it, I recommend you do watch yesterday's film, because both brown trout were absolute stunners, obviously not big for you guys you know fishing in America or wherever you may be overseas, in the UK we only get little brownies! But size isn't everything fortunately

I don't really talk much about the gear I don't think I haven't mentioned it Erm, my rod is a Vision Vipu, 9 foot 5 weight rod I hadn't got a clue when I purchased it about what I needed I went to a very good fly fishing shop in Crediton, basically threw myself at the mercy of the proprietor and asked him what I'd need At the time I thought I'd be doing more trout farm fishing and the occasional spot of river fishing, because i hadn't at that time discovered the access i have for the River Exe, so I got a 9 foot 5 weight right on the recommendation, the reel was on recommendation, line was recommend everything, basically as a novice, rather than researching the internet, which it did a little bit because let's be honest I'm a man and that's what men do

When it's a hobby suddenly, we don't have time for anything but we have hours to research our hobbies online! I did a little bit of that but you I threw myself at the mercy of proprietor because, well, the voice of a person you can actually talk to and see and touch and is experienced and a professional I hope, I value far more than a hundred forums reviews etc So yeah I love my rod, one day I'm sure I'll upgrade it but I can't see any need for quite some time My leaders don't tend to change very often but I'm going to put a slightly longer tippet on today, only reason being is because it is so bright okay you can look at the river while I set up so a perfection loop at the end of my tippet The tippet I'm going for is a 6x what beautifully hot day, we've had a terrible August here in the UK, rain, rain, rain just rained all the time that's why the river has been so high, this the lowest I've seen it for a long time and even this is high, but it's running clear and the flow is dropping so I'm hoping the trout, like yesterday, are just as eager to feed Right now I'm prospecting so I'm going to stick on a reasonable sized dry fly

Let's see what's in the box Anyway you guys that's all my flies that I keep using I just keep adding to them, adding to them, eventually I sort them out I might try a black fly yeah black gnat I think it is, very large with a white post Just check the barb is out, yep no barb, and you can look down stream, it's just easier for me to tie the knot with the wind or breeze – right going to remember to keep getting my arms out the way of the camera! There we go, last piece of the jigsaw I don't know if you can see on the camera, Weatherby's dry fly

It's a floatant I know a lot of you guys use Frog's Fanny, I used to use that extremely expensive, not extremely expensive, but extremely expensive if you use it at the rate I did! So this is what I'm using, its bottled in the UK little brush as you'd expect just like with Frogs Fanny I think I got a bit of moisture in this yesterday it was raining on me a little bit There we go, I always give it a decent coat when I first start just makes it easier to freshen up Let's just check to make sure I haven't left any line, haven't left anything, good, right! let's go up stream see what we can do and cool off a bit man it's hot today! and what we're going to try and do is not break the wrist anyone watching my films know that's what I do all the time I You never know because there's a little weedbed here yeah my cast isn't perfect but hey ho the fish don't know that! I've forgotten because I was talking to put my glasses on! silly boy That's better everything looks normal and green, or amber sorry I've waded a little bit heavy into this area so I'm not expecting to get anything there's a natural on the water there that's got away scot free by the looks of it watching him, yeah Making the trout angry

I never do as well on this little spot I just think I should I think I once saw a brownie rise in here, Oh well that's that then! Let's tighten that up! let's not do that again Here we go! What a beautiful brownie! look at that! A stunning River Exe brownie! So I don't know a lot about brown trout but my theory is, and it is only a theory With the flow being faster obviously they could feed but they really want to take advantage now of the slower flow to feed upon naturals that are available now, more substantial naturals, things that they don't have to do a lot to catch, they can just lie in wait for

So my theory is that trout today should be reasonably easy to catch I know I use a lot of this stuff but it gives me confidence and I think it makes a difference Right so that was under the tree let's go in front of the tree It's lovely to see this river clear Oh we have a rise! Argh too far back! Better! What! i don't believe that! How did we get a refusal on that! i don't think that was a mistimed take, I was just rubbish! He's still rising! Still rising! Crikey! Right, pay attention, pay attention Got him! I it feels a nice fish! Oh yeah! Oh! Woken up! Definitely woken up! Oh fantastic fish! Calm down, calm down! What beautiful colors! Oh he has spat the hook! That is a beautiful fish! And a rare one as I got a second chance for that, unless there's more than one trout over there okay I'm always in a mess after a fish Ever since I was a kid a fish gives me tangles! I can't put this fly where I want it today! Argh! I doubt he is going to rise again but we are going to try! There's another cracking fish! Look at that! Right, time to move! Well isn't that stunning! That is beautiful! It's so nice I am going to get my camera out! Which is my phone which of course is in a waterproof case! I'll try and do it with the rod not in the picture and without a line very nice, right, what are we here for, fishing aren't we! so it's completely into the unknown this, I've never fished this section before It's quite typical of everything else on the Exe, deep section a center and I'm guessing that's where the fish are going to be making sure my joints are good right I was beginning to doubt myself!
